Z-Wave Alliance makes source code publicly available to Alliance members

The Z-Wave Alliance has made the source code behind the smart home standard of the same name publicly available. This only applies to developers who join the project as a member. The Z-Wave Source Code Project is supervised by a new working group.

The Z-Wave Alliance writes in a press release that the Z-Wave source code is now available on GitHub, but only for members of the alliance. It currently has about 300 members. The Z-Wave Alliance has been working on making the code public since 2019, but so far without much success.

Developers who have joined as members can contribute code to the project themselves. This is being done under the supervision of a new organisation, the OS Work Group. It is not known to what extent the OSWG has control over pull requests for the code.

The creators of the standard think there is still a future for Z-Wave, despite the emergence of Matter. That smart home standard, which is supported by most major tech companies, seems to be gaining popularity, even though there are currently hardly any devices that use it. “Matter is flashy and new and has support from many companies that draws a lot of attention to smart home, but it’s easy to overlook the fact that Z-Wave is the most established, trusted and secure smart home standard,” the developers write.
