Youtuber crafts USB-C port next to Lightning port on iPhone 12 mini
A mudder on YouTube has put a USB-C port next to an iPhone 12 mini’s Lightning port. So there are now two ports on his phone. He made sure that no functions were lost after the adjustment.
On YouTube has a South Korean mud an iPhone 12 mini equipped with a USB-C port. It is not the first time that someone provides an iPhone with a USB-C port, but now the Lightning port is also on it. The speaker and microphone also still function.
The mud used a hair dryer and razor to get the device open. He then removed the flex cables from the display, battery and speaker, among other things. After determining where to place the connector, he drilled a hole in the bottom right side of the iPhone. He then placed the USB-C connection in that opening and made the connection with the Lightning connector. A separate connection to the pcb was therefore not necessary.
To ensure that the speaker and microphone remained intact, he shortened the speaker unit. That way, both the speaker and the microphone still fit in the housing. At the end of the video a closed phone can be seen that can be connected to iTunes via both connections.
Apple is expected to make the switch to USB-C in the coming years. The company would already test internally with iPhones with a USB-C connection. From 2024, the use of USB-C in smartphones, among other things, will be mandatory in Europe.
