YouTube turns on HDR support in Android app
YouTube has added HDR support to its Android app for a select number of smartphones. Initially, the Google Pixel, LG V30, Samsung Galaxy S8 and Note 8 and the Sony Experia XZ Premium can display HDR via the YouTube app.
At a later time, the HDR support of the YouTube app should come to more devices. The LG G6, for example, is still missing from the list, while this smartphone does offer HDR support. On Reddit, among others, users report that their YouTube app supports HDR.
YouTube follows Netflix, which also announced last week to support HDR playback, initially only on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and the Sony Xperia XZ1. On other platforms, YouTube has supported HDR for some time. Since November last year, the YouTube app on HDR TVs with the new Chromecast Ultra and Samsung Suhd and UHD TVs can be used to view images with HDR.
At both Netflix and YouTube, the range of videos with HDR is still limited.
