Yahoo to stop Messenger service after eighteen years

Yahoo has announced that the Messenger chat service will soon no longer be supported. This puts an end to the software that was introduced eighteen years ago. By the way, Yahoo has already released a new chat service.

According to the company, the old chat software will no longer be usable from August 5; on that day, Yahoo disables the ability to log in. The intention is for users to switch to the new Messenger, which was launched in December. This app works on Android, iOS and the desktop, and includes integration with Flickr and Tumblr.

The discontinuation of the old Messenger brings an end to an era of eighteen years. Yahoo released the chat software in 1998, then under the name Pager. The software became particularly popular in parts of Asia, and is still widely used there.

Yahoo has been trying to get rid of software services that are not running well for some time now. This has to do with a reorganization that should make the company profitable again. Last week it was announced that 3000 patents have to be sold.
