Yahoo has laid off many of its employees in India. The layoffs would virtually destroy the Software Development Center in Bangalore, which was Yahoo’s largest research center outside of Silicon Valley. It is the largest layoff since 2012.

There is uncertainty about the amount of jobs that will be lost; Indian media speak of 300, 400 to 600 layoffs. It is clear that it mainly concerns developers and that the Software Development Center in Bangalore is virtually closed down. Some of them are said to have been asked to come to Sunnyvale, California, to continue working for Yahoo.

It is unclear how many employees Yahoo still has in India, but estimates are based on 1,500 out of a total of approximately 12,000. It is the largest layoff since 2012, when Yahoo cut 2,000 jobs. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is under pressure to improve results. The company has acquired a number of small businesses in the US in recent years, but does not want to grow its workforce too much.
