Xiaomi’s camera app hints at 8k video recording at 30fps
Xiaomi is believed to be working on a phone that can record 8k video at 30 frames per second. Evidence for this was found in Xiaomi’s camera app in Miui 11. The app contains a sequence of code mentioning 8k video at 30fps.
Xiaomi introduced Miui 11, the next version of its Android skin, this week. In addition to a new design and several new functions, the camera app also received an update. This contains a few lines of code, reports website XDA Developers. This concerns video with a resolution of 7680×4320 pixels. In addition, an 8k, 30fps logo was found in the source code of the Mi Camera app.

The new video feature is expected to be introduced in an unannounced device. Xiaomi’s current flagship model, the Mi Mix Alpha, includes a 108MP sensor from Samsung. This camera supports up to 6k video at 30 frames per second.
This is probably a device with a new Snapdragon processor. Qualcomm’s current flagship model, the Snapdragon 855, includes a Spectra 380 image signal processor that does not officially support 8k video recording. The next high-end Snapdragon CPU may contain an upgraded Spectra chip with official 8k support.
There are some smartphones that can record 8k videos despite the limitations of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chip. The Nubia Red Magic 3 does this at 15fps. According to XDA Developers, users can also record 8k videos at 24fps on Asus’ ROG Phone II and ZenFone 6. This requires a custom profile in the free FreeDCam app.
