Xiaomi unveils 5g variant of Mi Mix 3
Xiaomi is going to release a 5g variant of the Mi Mix 3. The phone, according to the Chinese company, is the same as the Mi Mix 3 released in January with its sliding camera mechanism, but with the Snapdragon 855-soc, including the X50-5g modem.
Xiaomi has demonstrated the Mi Mix 3 5G through a Skype video call that, according to the company, went over the 5G network of the Spanish branch of Orange. The presentation of the smartphone was held there on the occasion of the Mobile World Congress, which has started. Xiaomi claims it is the first 5G call outside of China.
The phone should be ‘essentially’ the same as the existing Mi Mix 3, but with 5G. However, the Mi Mix 3 runs on a Snapdragon 845 and this new variant on a Snapdragon 855. When the Sd855 was announced in December, Qualcomm claimed that the processor cores of this new soc can deliver up to 45 percent better performance compared to the 845. Although a benchmark should ultimately show how big the difference between the two will be, a gap is indeed possible.
It is important to mention that the X50 modem in the Snapdragon 855 cannot use all 5g bands that will be used in the Benelux. It is therefore still a question of whether this device can be used on 5g networks in the Benelux and with which providers. The planned successor to this modem, the X55, supports more 5G bands and can reach higher speeds.
The Mi Mix 3 5G will be available in the colors onyx black and sapphire blue. The introduction will take place in May and the device will have a starting price of 599 euros, which is almost 100 euros more than the original. Xiaomi also mentions that more than 224 million smartphone users are active monthly on Miui, the company’s Android shell.
