Xiaomi presents its own Surge S1 soc in Mi 5C phone
Xiaomi has announced its own octacore Surge S1 soc. It was developed by Xiaomi itself and uses the big.LITTLE architecture. The first device with the soc is the Mi 5C. In addition, the manufacturer comes with the Redmi 4X.
The Surge S1 soc is a 64-bit octacore processor with Cortex-A53 cores, half of which runs at 2.2GHz and the other half at 1.4GHz. Xiaomi has some GeekBench results from the soc . via Twitter published, which shows that it scores higher than a Snapdragon 625 in terms of CPU, but lower than a Helio P20 from MediaTek. The soc is baked on the 28nm process of TSMC, reports Engadget. Earlier rumors were based on a 14nm chip. The GPU is a Mali-T860 MP4, which has to handle energy more efficiently than the Mali-T760.
Reports about the arrival of Xiaomi’s own soc have been around for some time. In 2014, Xiaomi started the joint venture Pine Cone Electronics with chip manufacturer LeadCore, in which Xiaomi has a majority stake of 51 percent. The collaboration with Leadcore has already led to the entry-level smartphone Redmi 2A with the LC1860C processor from Leadcore.
The Mi 5C has a 5.15″ screen with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, just like the previously released Mi 5. The phone has 3GB lpddr3 memory in addition to 64GB storage. The Mi 5C runs on Android 6.0, but according to the manufacturer follows an upgrade to Android 7.1 in March. The price of the device comes down to 1500 Chinese yuan, converted about 206 euros.
