Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 coming out next month will support 5g
The Mi Mix 3, a high-end smartphone that Xiaomi plans to release next month, will support 5g. The manufacturer has said so on Twitter. There are no networks yet to use 5g.
Xiaomi spokesman Donovang Sung has a picture on Twitter showing off the Mi Mix 3 with 5g support. The photo shows the upcoming Mi Mix 3 with a 5g icon in the picture and behind it monitors with the status of three 5g connections and a 4g connection. In addition, Sung seems to hint that the Mi Mix 3 supports 5g on, for example, band n257, 28GHz. This enables speeds of up to tens of gigabits per second.
This is already possible by linking a current soc to a modem with 5G support. For example, Xiaomi could combine a Snapdragon 845-soc that is now in many high-end smartphones with a Qualcomm X50 modem that supports 5g on the bands visible in the photo. Xiaomi should also build in the antennas, something that currently requires a relatively large amount of space in the housing.
Users will not benefit from 5g yet, because providers will only start offering 5g next year. In the Benelux this can take even longer; 5g will not arrive in the Low Countries until at the earliest in two years and with many providers it will probably take even longer. Xiaomi will most likely announce the Mi Mix 3 next month. Xiaomi previously showed the extendable camera that will be in the device. That makes a notch in the screen unnecessary.
