Xiaomi hints at phone with 108-megapixel camera
Xiaomi has hinted at the arrival of a phone with a camera that has a maximum resolution of 108 megapixels. Such camera sensors for phones are not yet available, although socs already support it.
The maximum resolution of that camera is 12,032×9024 pixels, good for a total of 108.5 megapixels, the teaser states. The only text that appears is ‘see you later’. According to twitterer Ice Universe it concerns the upcoming Mi Mix 4, the successor to the Mix 3, which appeared at the end of last year. Xiaomi often experiments with new techniques and components in its Mix phones.
Other details about the sensor are not yet known. For example, it is unknown how large the pixels and the sensor would be. Such a sensor can merge information from nine pixels into one pixel for a 12-megapixel photo.
Xiaomi also revealed information about the 64-megapixel sensor that will be in an upcoming Redmi phone. That’s a Samsung GW1. It has pixels of 0.8 micrometers and a sensor size of 1/1.7 “, the same size as, for example, the IMX600 sensor from the Huawei P20 Pro, which has a resolution of 40 megapixels.
Qualcomm socs have been supporting higher resolutions for a while now. For example, a midrange soc like the Snapdragon 710 goes up to 192 megapixels. If manufacturers want to use multi-frame noise reduction and zero shutter lag, the maximum resolution drops to 48 megapixels.
