Xbox Series X test group can play games with Dolby Vision
Microsoft has begun testing Dolby Vision playback with games on the Xbox Series X console. Playing games with this HDR standard is currently only possible with a small group of testers from the Alpha Ring.
The German website Xbox Dynasty, among others, reports based on user experiences and own findings that Dolby Vision works while playing Sniper Elite 4, Marvel’s Avengers, Borderlands 3 and Wreckfest. On Twitter says a user that it also works at Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
Multiple users and also hdr expert Adam Fairclough report that Dolby Vision works with all games. This concerns games that are already available in HDR10, and SDR games that are still provided with high dynamic range via the Auto HDR function of the Xbox Series X.
For the time being, it seems to be a test in which Dolby Labs, the company behind the Dolby Vision standard, has not provided one or a few specific games with a Dolby Vision implementation. The current implementation of the standard appears to be applied by the console during testing.
Fairclough reports that the feature is only available at 60Hz and that static tone mapping is applied. In his view, there is no visible progress from what was previously possible, indicating that it is likely during this test no added value compared to the regular HDR10.
Microsoft has confirmed that a test is currently underway, but it is still unclear when Dolby Vision will be available to a wider group of users. It was already known that support for Dolby Vision would come this year.
