Xbox Scorpio developers can use 9GB gddr5 for games
Microsoft has found a way to release additional video memory for developers with the upcoming Scorpio console. Developers can therefore not use 8 but 9GB gddr5 for games. The console is rumored to be called ‘Xbox 10 S’.
according to Mike Ybarra, vice president of the Xbox division at Microsoft, the company continues to tinker with the Scorpio. Initially, Microsoft reported claiming 4GB of the 12GB gddr5 for system functions, but according to Ybarra, this has been reduced to 3GB, making 9GB available for games. Since the memory is also used as a cache, all games benefit from the extra GB, thus Ybarra, even if they are not optimized for 9GB.
The current Xbox One reserves 3GB of the 8GB DDR3 for system functions. Microsoft announced at the introduction that the Scorpio needed an extra gigabyte to run the interface at 4k. It is not known which work-around the company has applied so that this is no longer necessary.
According to The Verge, Microsoft is going to release the Scorpio under the name ‘Xbox 10 S’ and the company aims to turn the device into a PC for the living room. The site derives the name from a teaser for the E3, in which the text ‘X10S101-317’ can be seen. “X10S” would stand for Xbox 10 S, while “101317” would refer to October 13, 2017, the date from which the console would go on sale.
