Xbox One sold more than PS4 in US last quarter

The Xbox One has now outsold the PlayStation 4 for three months in a row, according to figures from market researcher NPD Group. In those three months, both Microsoft and major competitor Sony came up with a console revision.

NPD itself does not disclose the numbers publicly, and the news item comes out via VentureBeat. On August 2, the first variant of the Xbox One S came on the market and on September 15, Sony came up with the PlayStation 4 Slim. In addition, the company made the original PS4 cheaper, which did not turn the tide for Sony.

The two are working on other revisions of the consoles at the same time, but release dates are quite different. The new Xbox, called Scorpio, will be Microsoft’s 4K console and should hit the market sometime by the end of 2017. Sony’s 4K console, however, will be released on November 10, but will again use upscaling techniques to achieve that resolution. It is possible that Sony will catch up in the coming months because Sony enthusiasts are waiting for the new console.

On the other hand, the strong sales figures can also be explained by the fact that the Xbox One S can play 4K blurays, while the PS4 Slim and upcoming Pro cannot. In any case, the sales figures in the summer months are always lower than in the coming months, because the holidays are in between. Those months will say more about the popularity of the two consoles, regardless of which of the two sells better.
