Xbox One and Windows games get support for DTS:X audio format

The Xbox One console and Windows systems will receive support for the DTS:X audio format with games. Microsoft game console users or PC owners have been able to use the comparable Dolby Atmos for some time, but support for DTS:X is still lacking.

Steven Wilssens, a head of Microsoft’s audio division, reports on Twitter that DTS:X support is coming to both Windows and Xbox One in the coming weeks. The audio format is coming first to PC Insiders, after which it can also be tested for the Xbox Insiders. It is still unknown when updates will be released that will officially release DTS:X support.

As with DTS:X, Dolby Atmos is about object-based audio signals with height information. Microsoft already released an update for the Xbox One in April 2017 with which Dolby Atmos and DTS:X via bitstream passthrough are already available for playing Blu-rays. On the Xbox One, the Dolby Access app can be used to enable Dolby Atmos in games.

As far as we know, no Xbox One games have been announced that support the DTS:X audio format. An app may also be released that makes the format available to headphone users, as is already the case with Dolby Atmos.
