XBMC successor Kodi mainly consists of ‘polishing work’ according to makers
XBMC 14, which is to be released under the name Kodi, will not get a lot of new features like the latest Gotham release. According to the developers, Kodi will mainly consist of polishing and cleaning the code of the open source media center.
The XBMC developers state that the source code of the popular open source media center software is sometimes inconsistent, and may also contain compatibility issues. The gui can also be refined. Kodi will therefore mainly require planing that will take place under the hood. With the release of the two alpha versions of Kodi, a total of 333 changes were made, which can therefore mainly be described as polishing work.
One of the visible changes is the addition of virtual keyboards with different layouts, such as azerty, or for specific languages with different characters, such as Bulgarian or Hebrew. In addition, Kodi gets a setting that keeps add-ons always up-to-date. Another option is to only get a notification when there are new versions and to completely disable the update mechanism in Kodi.
Android users get in Kodi the ability to play 5.1 pcm audio, while the vp9 codec supports multithreading. Furthermore, the developers report that many skin designers have to work again to make their creations suitable for Kodi.
