The original German developer of the to-do list app Wunderlist has suggested that Microsoft buy back the software. Microsoft acquired Wunderlist in 2015 but decided to replace the app with its own alternative in 2017.

It is not known whether there are actually talks about a takeover. Wunderlist founder Christian Reber made his intention via Twitter known. He expressed his sadness that Microsoft wants to stop Wunderlist when there would be many happy users: “Keep the team, focus on Microsoft To-Do and no one will be mad for not stopping Wunderlist.”

Microsoft To-Do is Microsoft’s own app for to-do lists and already in 2017 Microsoft announced its intention to replace Wunderlist with To-Do. This would happen once To-Do includes Wunderlist functionality. It is unknown when Microsoft will complete this.

Microsoft acquired Wunderlist in 2015, after which Reber also joined Microsoft. A few months after Microsoft announced its preference for To-Do in 2017, the German developer quit the company. He declared in 2018 that the problem was caused by the Wunderlist API running on Amazon Web Services. Instead of a port to Azure, Microsoft would have chosen to completely rewrite the app. However, this would be more complicated than initially expected. According to Reber, Microsoft’s actual plan was to replace Wunderlist with To-Do in 2018.
