WordPress.org blogs could get a paywall starting Wednesday, allowing users to read certain posts only if they support authors through Patreon. The paywall is a result of the introduction of the integration of crowdfunding service Patreon with other sites and services.

Authors on WordPress.org with a Patreon account can set when writing a post that the post can only be read in full by people who support them on Patreon with at least a certain amount, the crowdfunding service writes. Patreon is a service where users can subscribe to support artists and artists, for example. In return, donors often get access to exclusive content or chat sessions with the Patreon account operator.

The integration with WordPress ensures that authors can set in the editor that a post can only be read by donors. Besides WordPress, many more services participate, such as Google Sheets, MailChimp and Discourse. For example, it is possible to give donors access to chat rooms, mailings or Slack channels. Patreon is not affiliated with YouTube, the platform on which many Patreon account operators publish.

All options can be seen in the App Directory. The integration with other services can be used from Wednesday. At the moment there are eleven and that should grow to a hundred in the coming year.
