Wine 7.0 with better support for 64bit systems is available
Windows emulator Wine has received a major new update with version 7.0. There is better support for much more recent GPUs and for multiple monitors. Wine can now also run 32bit and 64bit Windows apps side by side and run 32bit apps on 64bit Linux distros.
The development team behind the software writes in the release notes that Wine can now handle 64bit software better. The 64bit Windows-on-Windows architecture or WoW64 has been implemented for this purpose. As a result, the application can now run 32-bit applications on 64-bit Unix systems. It is also possible to run 32 and 64 bit applications simultaneously. Wine 7 does this by using thunks to let the applications talk to each other.
Graphically, there are also several changes, including support for a new Win32u library and WindowsCodecs for WMP and DDS images. The Vulkan rendering engine has also been modified to support multiple displays via Direct3D. It also supports more graphics cards.
Wine, an abbreviation of Wine Is Not an Emulator, now also works on the new Apple M1 socs, and the software also gets a graphic lick of paint with, among other things, new theming. The release is already available for download, although binaries have yet to be created for several distros.
