Windows update leads to issues in Windows 7, and Outlook 2010 and 2013
Windows security update KB3097877 causes Outlook 2010 and 2013 to crash when scrolling through emails. There are also reports of users who were no longer able to log in to Windows 7 machines. Microsoft has since patched the update.
The notifications about being unable to log in can be found here and there, but seem to be less common than the Outlook problems. Also, there are several stories about the Outlook problem. Some sources state that it is due to downloading external images from emails, others refer to HTML in messages, and others to scrolling through emails. The issues can occur with Windows 7 or 8.1. The update does not apply to Windows 10.
To fix the login issues, users must first boot into the console in the Windows recovery environment, then uninstall the KB3097877 update. Machines that only have problems with Outlook should have been offered a new version of KB3097877 by now, which should fix the problems with Outlook.
