Windows Server 2016 will be available with Docker in mid-October
Microsoft announced several software packages Monday at its Ignite conference in Atlanta. It concerns the rtm version of Windows Server 2016 and System Center 2016 and the technical preview 2 of Azure Stack.
In addition, Windows Server 2016 now also includes native Docker containers, Microsoft writes. Docker containers can also be used by owners of Windows 10 with the Anniversary Update.
An rtm version of Windows Server 2016 is available immediately. Microsoft will announce what the package will cost for both Windows Server 2016 and System Center 2016 on October 1. The final versions should be available from ‘mid-October’.
Azure Stack will not be officially released until mid-2017, partly because Microsoft recently changed its strategy around Azure Stack. The company already announced this during the Worldwide Partner Conference in July.
For Windows 10 and Office 365, Microsoft mainly announced improvements and extensions to various security systems during the conference, such as extensions to Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint of Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection. In addition, Outlook for paying users for iOS and Android will be handled entirely by the Microsoft Cloud so that no data is cached outside Office 365.
Microsoft also reported in Atlanta that there are now about 400 million active devices using Windows 10, with active devices being considered devices that were active in the past 28 days. That number is not only made up of Windows 10 PCs, tablets and phones, but also Xbox One, HoloLens and Surface Hubs, writes All About Microsoft.
