Windows gets HDR calibration tool and optimizations for games in window mode

Microsoft will soon bring the Xbox HDR calibration tool to a test version of Windows. The company will also give users the option to optimize DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games played in window mode.

According to Microsoft, the Xbox HDR calibration tool should ensure that content on non-certified HDR screens is displayed better. According to the company, the tool should prevent clipping from occurring at dark or bright parts in the HDR image, causing details to be lost. The tool should also help to display better color reproduction in games.

Microsoft uses three test patterns for this. The first pattern should help the gamer determine how dark the image can appear on the screen before a loss of detail occurs. In the second pattern, the gamer uses the tool to analyze how bright the image can go before any details are lost. The last pattern is used to determine how high the brightness of a display can effectively go.

Members of the Windows Insider Dev Channel will soon see a new reference to the tool in the HDR settings of the Settings app in Windows. According to Microsoft, that reference is a placeholder because the tool will be available in the Microsoft Store at a later time, although it is not yet clear when exactly.

Optimization for games in window mode

Microsoft is also adding an optimization option to the Settings app for games that run in window mode. DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed mode or borderless windowed mode will experience less latency, see Auto HDR enabled, or maintain a variable refresh rate thanks to this option. Games that run in fullscreen mode, but also DirectX12 games, already enjoy these optimizations, according to Microsoft.

The optimization option for games in window mode will be found in the Settings app, in the graphics settings from build 22545. Users who experience problems with the optimizations can also choose to disable it completely or on a game-by-game basis. .
