Windows 11 has received a new feature that makes it possible to change the default terminal from Windows Console Host to an alternative. Next year, Windows Terminal will become the new default terminal on Windows 11 devices.

Windows Terminal will become the new default terminal in Windows 11 in 2022, replacing Windows Console Host. It also becomes possible to adjust the standard terminal yourself. This can be read in a developer blog post by program manager Kayla Cinnamon of Microsoft.

In it she writes how it is possible in Windows 11 to adjust the standard terminal. Previously, this was only possible with third-party software. Now you can do this in three places in Windows 11: in the developer settings on the Settings page under Privacy & Security, in the Windows Terminal settings on the startup page and within the Windows Console Host property sheet.

In the course of 2022, Windows Terminal should become the default terminal in Windows 11. This will initially be done through the Windows Insider Program and eventually come to everyone. Microsoft is calling on users to report bugs in Terminal via Github.
