Windows 10 version 2004 no longer has update delay options in settings menu

Starting with Windows 10 version 2004, Microsoft has removed the option to defer updates from the Updates options. If you still want to postpone updates, you can still go to group policies. This option is separate from the option to pause updates for up to 35 days.

This applies to Pro, Enterprise and Education; Home already had a different update policy with a maximum delay of 35 days. Microsoft states that the change was made to avoid confusion and to prevent feature update versions from not being installed on versions that are near end of service. Only when a Windows 10 version is almost EOL, the installation is now automatically initiated, but a delay on top of that ensures that a user is on a version that is not supported. In addition, the policy of ‘force updates only on approaching EOL status’ means that a feature update is only installed once a year, while Microsoft releases two per year.

If you are on version 2004 and still want to use update deferral, you must open the local group policy editor and navigate to the Windows Update for Business folder. There the setting for preview builds and feature updates can be adjusted and a delay of 365 days can be set.

Windows 10 version 2004, also known as the May 2020 Update, is already available for download, but Microsoft has not yet announced general availability of the new version. It is currently only offered to users who download manually with the Media Creation Tool, users on version 1809, and those who manually click check for updates.
