Windows 10 runs on more than 900 million devices, according to Microsoft
According to Microsoft, Windows 10 now runs on more than 900 million devices. The number of Windows 10 installations has increased by 100 million in six months. Microsoft also includes devices such as the HoloLens and Xbox consoles.
Yusuf Mehdi, chief executive of Microsoft’s Modern Life, Search & Devices Group, reports the new milestone on Twitter. Also, the Microsoft by the Numbers website has been updated. According to Mehdi, more new Windows 10 devices than ever have been added in the past 12 months. He mentions PCs, the HoloLens, Xbox consoles and the Surface Hub.
Mehdi also states that more devices will be added next week. He is referring to the Surface event on October 2, where Microsoft will announce new products. Microsoft is rumored to show a dual-screen Surface device that will run on a “lightweight” version of Windows 10. That operating system is probably called Windows Core OS. That name also appeared on Geekbench on Tuesday.
There is little official historical data on the number of Windows 10 installations. In March, Microsoft said Windows 10 was running on 800 million devices. In November 2017, Microsoft was already talking about 600 million devices, but according to Thurott that number was lower, because the maker of the operating system would then still count virtual machines.
Microsoft originally planned to provide one billion devices worldwide with Windows 10 by 2018, but that target was rejected in 2016. If current growth continues, there will be one billion devices running Windows 10 by Q1 2020.
