Whatsapp releases app for Windows Phone 8.1 – update

Whatsapp is no longer available for download from the Windows Phone Store for Windows Phone users. It looks like Whatsapp itself has removed the app. A developer behind Whatsapp indicated that a new app is coming that works on Windows Phone 8.1.

Windows Phone Central noted that the app is no longer showing up in the Windows Phone Store. Both for devices with Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1 it is no longer possible to install Whatsapp via the Store. The web version of the download store indicates that Whatsapp is no longer available.

Whatsapp is known to malfunction on Windows Phone 8.1. For example, there are problems with the notifications, where it can sometimes take tens of minutes before it is indicated that a new message has arrived. In the beta version of Whatsapp, users receive a warning that not all functionality may work properly.

Because the software does function well on Windows Phone 8, and many Windows Phone users still run this version of the software, it is unclear why Whatsapp removed the app from the download store. It is possible that a new version of the software will be released soon, but nothing has been announced by the maker about this yet.

Update 12:33 PM: The Spanish Windows Phone Apps claims to have had a response from a Whatsapp developer, who indicates that the software is temporarily unavailable due to an update. According to the developer, the beta program for Windows Phone 8.1 has been completed and a final version is ready. The new app, which will presumably work on Windows Phone 8.1, should appear online in the next few hours.
