WhatsApp may soon allow users to transfer call logs to new number

WABetaInfo reports that it has found texts in a beta version of WhatsApp that indicate the ability to transfer backups of chats to a WhatsApp account on a different phone number.

WABetaInfo reports that it is only possible to move the conversation history to another number ‘when the user links a new device to their WhatsApp account’. It does not say which version the text is in.

This feature comes shortly after other WhatsApp beta news about potential migration from Android to iOS and vice versa. At the time of writing, it is not yet possible to switch numbers or mobile operating systems and take WhatsApp conversation history with you.

The site reports that there is no indication of when the features will see the light of day. The fact that WABetaInfo digs them up in a beta version only means that the developer is working on them, but not how far that development has progressed.

Last year, the site also discovered indications that WhatsApp is working on the ability to use an account across devices. The menu to use WhatsApp Web was changed to a more generic UI that allows users to ‘link a new device’. It was striking that WhatsApp specifically mentioned the Facebook Portal.
