WhatsApp finally has a dark mode (and that’s how you activate it)

WhatsApp has a dark mode from today. “It is designed to reduce eye strain in low-light environments,” WhatsApp announces the new feature on its blog. But it also looks very chic, and if you have an iPhone with an OLED screen you also save on your battery!

WhatsApp dark mode

In WhatsApp itself, you will search in vain for a button or switch that activates the dark mode. The dark theme in WhatsApp is not an institution within the app itself. It depends on the settings of your iPhone. Is it in dark mode? Then WhatsApp automatically goes black. If your iPhone is on Light, WhatsApp also has the old familiar looks again. This is how you switch on the dark mode:

  • Open the Settings app
  • Tap “Display and brightness.”
  • Select “Dark” and open WhatsApp to see the result.

Another way is via the Control Panel: press a little bit longer or harder on the bar with the sun and a button appears at the bottom left to activate the dark mode.

Is nothing happening? Then check whether you have updated the app to the most recent version.

To activate the feature in Android 10 and iOS 13, simply go to system settings and enable dark mode. On Android 9, you can go to WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Theme and select ‘Dark.’

WhatsApp itself has made a somewhat exaggerated video in which they show why it is almost impossible to live with only the light mode:
