WhatsApp detects suspicious links and shows images in notifications on iOS

WhatsApp has updated its iOS app. The updated client provides warnings if the user receives suspicious links. In addition, the app shows previews of images and gifs in notifications.

The update brings WhatsApp to version number 2.18.90 and it is only supported for devices on iOS 8 and above, meaning the iPhone 4 and earlier smartphones are left out. iOS 7 users can continue to use WhatsApp until February 1, 2020, provided they have activated their account on their device, Wabetainfo writes.

Anyone using the updated app will now see a warning when receiving a suspicious link. It is not about an extensive check of the page via the WhatsApp servers; the app checks the text of the link locally for the presence of strange characters, which may indicate that the link is pointing to a rogue page pretending to be a legitimate site.

The version history of the App Store also states that from version 2.18.90 WhatsApp can show previews of images and gifs within the notification of a new message. The images can also be downloaded directly from the notification window. Furthermore, within the app you can search for status updates and there is support for the Wallet.
