The FreeBSD Foundation has received a $1 million donation from WhatsApp CEO and co-founder Jan Koum. Converted to an amount of 800,000 euros. He is therefore responsible for the largest donation since the foundation of the organization.

It is unclear what exactly will happen with the money; the organization has set up a team to look into this. The aim is that the effects of the donation will remain visible for years to come. Thus, the speed of the growth of the organization must be promoted, creating new possibilities and other services. It is unknown what this will look like in practice.

Koum has further explained his donation via Facebook. The WhatsApp founder and CEO says he wants to shed light on the good work of the FreeBSD Foundation. Everyone would benefit from the continued existence of the open source operating system, because then other people would have the same opportunities as they have been given in the past.

The CEO therefore sets an example based on his past. In the late 90s, FreeBSD was his favorite operating system. Koum didn’t have much money at the time, and the operating system landed him a job at Yahoo! because they used it too. FreeBSD is still used to run WhatsApp’s servers, according to Koum.
