WhatsApp can turn videos into animated gifs
WhatsApp has received support for animated gifs. If users send a video of six seconds or less, the chat app can convert it into a gif. The support is in the Android version of the app with version number 2.16.244.
When adding video, users must click on the video icon at the top right of the screen, after which a gif logo will appear in that spot and WhatsApp can send the video in that format, Android Police writes. It works with newly recorded videos or movies that are six seconds or less. WhatsApp treats GIFs differently from videos: by default, it plays them right away without the user having to press a button, and it also plays inline.
The support for animated gifs is still limited. For example, where Twitter provides users with a searchable database of gifs to insert into a tweet, WhatsApp users have to find corresponding videos themselves. Sending animated gifs is included in WhatsApp, but requires a detour and root access to activate.
It is unknown if animated gifs will also work with the iOS and Windows Phone version of WhatsApp and if not, when that support will follow. Often WhatsApp first adds support for a function on one platform, after which the other platforms follow after a few months. There have been rumors about the new feature before.
