WhatsApp beta shows feature for notification to leave group conversation

WhatsApp appears to be working on a feature to remind users to leave a group conversation. Users can set when the notification should occur. That should keep users’ inboxes cleaner than it is now.

WhatsApp Expiring Groups

The feature is called Expiring Groups, reports WABetaInfo, and can be found in the settings of a particular group. If the function is enabled, it is possible to receive a notification after a day, a week or on a date of your choice. At that moment a message will appear asking you to leave the group.

Expiring Groups only works on the user’s side and therefore has no influence on the rest of the group participants. The feature seems mainly intended for group conversations that have a clear end goal, such as groups for a specific event or birthday. Now Meta’s chat app has no built-in way to remind users to delete old groups.

It is still unknown if and when the feature will appear in the stable version of WhatsApp. Typically this happens a few months to a year after the first signs appear in beta versions. The feature is in the beta for iOS, version 23.5.0.70.
