WhatsApp backup no longer depends on Google Drive storage capacity
The data that WhatsApp backs up on Google Drive will no longer count towards the user’s quota from November. This is due to a new agreement between Google and WhatsApp.
Google has sent an email to WhatsApp users who back up to Google Drive. Users can now back up WhatsApp history to Google’s cloud service without compromising the available space with that service. Google gives users who don’t pay for storage 15GB of storage by default.
The Android version of WhatsApp uses Google’s storage service for backing up. Video backup is disabled by default, but images are backed up.
Google also announced that backups that have not been updated for more than a year will now be automatically removed from Drive. The new agreement will take effect on November 12 this year, but some users are already seeing the backup no longer count in their Drive storage, according to Google.
