WhatsApp is in the process of updating its service, removing the restrictions that only allow users to share a certain number of file types. The feature would slowly be made available to all users.

The site WABetaInfo writes that the feature will become available “very slowly, because WhatsApp is first testing it with a number of users”. WhatsApp users from different countries let via Twitter to the site know that they can now use the function and screenshots show that they can share apk files.

According to the site apply there are file size limitations. For example, the maximum size is 128MB on iOS, 100MB on Android, 104.86MB on Windows Phone, and 64MB on the desktop and web client. Until now, it was only possible to share a limited number of file types via the chat app, including several Microsoft Office files.

In March, security company Check Point showed another attack that made it possible to take over user accounts. This was possible by bypassing the restrictions around file types.
