Western Digital unveils official PlayStation 5 SSDs, 4TB for 470 euros
Western Digital has announced an officially licensed line of NVMe SSDs for the PlayStation 5 called the WD Black SN850P. Three storage capacities are available, namely 1TB, 2TB and 4TB for respective recommended prices of 141, 225 and 470 euros.
The SN850P series is basically an upgraded version of last year’s licensed SN850 for the PS5. For example, the sequential read and write speed of the sticks have increased significantly and, thanks to the collaboration with Sony, the SN850P series contains a modified heatsink with the PlayStation logo on it. According to the storage brand, this heatsink is ‘optimized for the PS5’. In addition to comparable versions with 1 and 2TB storage, a third variant with 4TB storage space is now being added.
Although Western Digital is the only manufacturer with an official SSD license from Sony, most major storage manufacturers make M.2 SSDs compatible with the PlayStation 5. In all cases, the manufacturers adhere to Sony’s guidelines, but the PlayStation -maker cautions that optimal performance of SSDs that meet the requirements cannot be guaranteed. Because the WD Black SN850P is officially licensed, users can probably expect the promised read and write speeds.
