WebVR in Chrome now works with Google Cardboard
Google has made WebVR in Chrome suitable for use with its VR platform Cardboard. Until now, the system only worked with the more expensive systems from Google Daydream and Samsung Gear VR. The move should make WebVR accessible to more users.
Support for high-end headsets such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive will follow later, Google says. The search giant says it works to provide VR experiences in the browser without having to install an app. As a demonstration, the American company has linked various experiments, such as the ping-pong game Konterball.
Among other things, the WebVR API provides access to the position and orientation of the VR headset, while the accompanying Gamepad API provides access to the input of virtual reality controllers. By offering the APIs it is possible to create applications for virtual reality that work equally in various browsers for VR systems. The initiative for WebVR came from Mozilla.
