WB Games is likely to patent Nemesis system from Mordor games
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, publisher of games Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, will most likely get a patent on the Nemesis system, a distinctive and much-loved part of those games.
WB Games has been trying to apply for a patent on the Nemesis system since 2015 , Eurogamer writes after his research. While it failed to obtain the patent in those years and received a final rejection from the US Patent & Trademark Office in 2019 , it persisted and received a notice of allowance in October last year , making it almost certain that Warner Brittle. will get hold of the patent.
The two games are third-person action games set in the Lord of the Rings universe. Players must face off against Sauron’s orc armies in a story set before the events of the books and movies.
The patent application may be the reason why similar systems are not or hardly found in other games. However, there has been a rumor that the system will make a return in the upcoming Batman game Gotham Knights . That game also falls under the umbrella of future patent holder Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
The Nemesis system is designed to set up procedurally generated sub-stories. Interactions between the main character of the game and the ork enemies can lead to the building of such a sub-story within the game. These are interactions such as murders, fleeing, shaming , but also the use of specific weapons or attributes in a confrontation, or the use of an orc as a spy.
