Wasteland 3 creator InXile is releasing sci-fi VR shooter Frostpoint VR this year
InXile Entertainment, the Microsoft-enlisted studio behind Wasteland 3, announces Frostpoint VR. That competitive shooter will be released later this year for the SteamVR platform and the Oculus Rift.
Frostpoint VR: Proving Grounds is, according to the makers, a pvp shooter ‘with a unique pve twist’. Two teams of ten players compete around an abandoned military base in Antarctica. Teams must take each other out while protecting themselves from ‘terrifying biomechanical creatures’.
According to the creators, the game will receive more than a dozen detailed weapons. They are made in such a way that it must appear realistic if users grasp them with two hands in VR. Players can hold the weapons, load through, fire and eject bullets with hand movements.
An open beta of Frostpoint VR will start in September, UploadVR writes. It is not yet known when the game will be released, but the developer says that the release will take place this year. The game is out for SteamVR and the Oculus Rift. The price is not known yet.
InXile has never made a shooter before. The studio is known for RPGs such as those in the Wasteland series. The latest installment, Wasteland 3, will be released on August 28. Another well-known RPG from the studio is The Bard’s Tale. In 2017, the studio already released VR game The Mage’s Tale.
The fact that InXile Entertainment is releasing a new VR game is also striking because Microsoft took over the studio in 2018. Presumably the studio had been working on the project for some time and was allowed to continue by Microsoft, although Xbox consoles do not have VR support. Frostpoint VR is published by Thirdverse.
