Wasteland 2 will be released in August this year for Windows, OS X and Linux. The developer inXile announced this on the Kickstarter page of the game. In total, $3 million was raised for the development of Wasteland 2.

The game raised $2,933,252 through Kickstarter, along with $110,000 in donations via PayPal. The studio needed $900,000 to develop the game. The extra money raised will be spent to make the game world bigger than originally planned. Furthermore, Obsidian Entertainment, a studio with a lot of experience in making RPGs, could be approached for help during development.

In a recent update to the game, now in beta, the game world has roughly doubled in size; players now also have access to all Arizona maps. Furthermore, inXile is still looking for volunteers who want to help translate the game into Spanish, French, German and Italian. Translators who translate 250 or more lines will receive a digital copy of the game.

InXile began fundraising in March 2012 for the development of Wasteland 2, the successor to the 1988 classic RPG. The original was the founder of the post-apocalyptic genre in RPGs. Wasteland 2 will not be a shooter, however, as many games from that genre are at the moment. According to inXite, the same type of game is put down as was done with the original game; that means top-down view and tactic-focused turn-based gameplay.

Wasteland 2’s development team is led by Brian Fargo, founder of former publisher Interplay Entertainment, which is responsible for games such as The Bard’s Tale, Wasteland and Neuromancer. The team also includes Alan Pavlish and Mike Stackpole, designers of the first Wasteland game, Mark Morgan, who created the music for Fallout 1 and 2, and Jason Anderson, who will write the story for Wasteland 2.
