WABetaInfo: WhatsApp Is Working On Community Feature
WABetaInfo has shared screenshots of an unofficially announced Community feature in WhatsApp. The feature is similar to Facebook Groups and gives administrators more options than standard WhatsApp group conversations.
According to WABetaInfo, community administrators will be given the option to create groups within the virtual community or link existing group conversations to the community. The website mentions ‘a field of study’ as an example of a community and the individual lessons as examples of group chats that can be incorporated into it. Users can also be added to a community by clicking a shared link.
The screenshots show that messages and phone calls are end-to-end encrypted. “No one, not even WhatsApp, can listen in or read along,” according to the information banner on the leaked screenshot. Community icons will be square with rounded corners instead of circular. It is not yet clear when or if the feature will actually be rolled out.
In September, it was announced that Twitter is also working on a similar communities feature for its platform. With this feature, Twitter wants to allow users to join groups in which they can tweet about specific interests and topics.
