Vulkan API support will be available in CryEngine 5.4 after delay in late July
Crytek has announced that version 5.4 of the CryEngine will receive support for the Vulkan API. The new version should be ready by the end of July. Vulkan support was initially scheduled for November last year.
Crytek reports that parts of the Vulkan implementation can already be seen in the code on Github, but it is not yet active. The developers are still making improvements to get the software stable for release at the end of July. In September last year, Crytek announced the arrival of support for the Vulkan API. The plan was that support would come in version 5.3, but that turned out to be unfeasible.
Vulkan is a graphics API largely based on AMD’s Mantle. Like Mantle and DirectX 12, this api is built to have less overhead than other APIs, such as OpenGL and older versions of DirectX. Among other things, PC games and Android mobile games can use Vulkan.
Crytek’s roadmap shows that support for multi-Gpu in DX12 will be available in CryEngine 5.5, the version that should be released in August. Initially, support for this was planned for February of this year. With multi-gpu in DX12, the software can combine the computing power of different GPUs, without these being placed in a crossfire or sli setup.
