Volvo wants to release self-driving cars with Nvidia technology by 2021
Swedish Volvo is collaborating with Nvidia and car safety company Autoliv to develop a system for self-driving cars. Volvo and Autoliv make the software based on Nvidia’s Drive PX system. Cars with this system should be on the market in 2021.
Volvo and Autoliv will use Nvidia’s artificial intelligence technology as the basis for their own software development. It concerns the Nvidia Drive PX system, which, through the use of sensors, is able to map out in real time what is happening around the car. Through a neural network, it should eventually be able to learn new situations for itself.
For this system, Nvidia uses two Tegra processors and two Pascal GPUs. The system is already being used by Tesla. It combines data from various camera sensors with radar information, and compares it with a map to plot a safe route in real time. Nvidia claims that this system should increase the safety of self-driving cars.
Volvo and Autoliv have created a new joint company called Zenuity to develop the software. Autoliv will eventually also sell the software to third parties. Volvo and Nvidia have previously worked together on a Volvo self-driving car project, but this program called ‘Drive Me’ was still completely experimental.
