Volkswagen starts over-the-air update small part of ID3 and ID4 cars

Volkswagen is starting over-the-air updates to about 2,000 customers with electric ID vehicles. In late summer, the ota should then be spread to 200,000 electric vehicles.

With the this week’s over-the-air update to a group of two thousand customers, the second run for Volkswagen takes place. Since February, the German car company has been providing updates to its own commercial vehicles remotely. The new round lasts six to seven weeks, writes Handelsblatt. If the updated systems prove to be stable, Volkswagen wants to send the update to more customers.

That should happen at the end of the summer and then 200,000 customers with an ID3 and ID4 in Europe should receive an update. The updates for customers in the US and China are planned later, and customers of other brands using Volkswagen’s MEB platform for electric vehicles will also have to wait.

To receive updates over the air, cars must have a SIM card and be connected to the internet. According to Volkswagen, this is the case for 80 percent of EV customers. The company wants to provide an update every three months. This year, for example, an update should appear that increases the range.

Furthermore, it is required that customers run at least ID.Software version 2.1. The first group, which VW calls the ‘First Movers Club’, will receive the update to version 2.3 this week. It brings functionality related to the lighting, environmental recognition and the infotainment system to the cars, in addition to performance and stability improvements.
