Volkswagen starts over-the-air update for small part ID3 and ID4 cars
Volkswagen starts with over-the-air updates to about two thousand customers with electric ID vehicles. The ota distribution to 200,000 electric vehicles should then take place in late summer.
With this week’s over-the-air update to a group of two thousand customers, the second run for Volkswagen takes place. The German car company has been providing remote updates to its own commercial vehicles since February. The new round will last six to seven weeks, Handelsblatt writes. If the updated systems turn out to be stable, Volkswagen wants to send the update to more customers.
This should happen at the end of the summer and then 200,000 customers with ID3 and ID4 in Europe should receive an update. Updates for customers in the US and China are planned for later, and customers of other brands using Volkswagen’s MEB platform for electric vehicles will also have to wait.
To receive updates over the air, cars must have a SIM card and be connected to the internet. According to Volkswagen, this is the case with 80 percent of customers with an EV. The company plans to provide an update every three months. For example, an update should appear this year that increases the range.
Furthermore, customers are required to run at least ID.Software version 2.1. The first group, which VW calls the ‘First Movers Club’, will receive the update to version 2.3 this week. It brings functionality related to the lighting, environment recognition and the infotainment system to the cars, in addition to performance and stability improvements.
