Volkswagen shows head-up display of ID.3 that gives directions in 3D
In a demo video, Volkswagen shows an optional head-up display for its electric car ID.3. Judging by the images, it appears that the hud is using a significant portion of the windshield to project elements such as road directions in 3D.
In the video, Volkswagen talks about an augmented reality head-up display that shows navigation instructions while driving. For example, drivers see arrows on the road when they have to take a turn. The information is displayed in 3D using augmented reality. For example, it appears to drivers that the visual cues are located three to ten meters in front of the car.
It is not known to what extent the images from the promotional video correspond to reality. There are already cars with comparable HUDs, but usually they can only display a small part of the window, and that involves 2D projections of, for example, an instrument panel.
The hud does not come standard with the ID.3; it is an option and the price is not yet known. Volkswagen also reports that the option is not available with the ID.3 1ST Edition. That is the first version of the car, which is currently available for reservation.
The ID.3 is Volkswagen’s first electric car designed as such from the ground up. The intention is that 100,000 copies will be delivered by the end of this year, but Volkswagen would have major problems with the car’s software. According to sources from the Süddeutsche Zeitung, there are serious concerns within the company whether that target is being achieved.
