Vodafone Germany activates 5G cell towers in Berlin and four other cities
Telecom operator Vodafone has started using 5g cell towers at several locations in Germany, including in Berlin. In the coming days, two other 5G base stations will be activated in the German capital.
Vodafone installed its first Berlin 5G cell tower in the science and technology park Adlershof, in the district of the same name in the southeast of Berlin. In addition to Berlin, the telecom company also activated 5G cell towers in the cities of Frankfurt, Solingen, Duisburg and Bremen this week. Meanwhile, Vodafone has forty 5G bass stations operational in Germany. Ten more will be added by the end of August, Telecompaper reports.
Like Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone in Germany has recently started offering smartphone subscriptions that also include the use of 5G. Auctioning of the 5G frequencies was not completed until June in Germany. It was expected that mainly the business community would make use of the fast mobile network, but private individuals are also showing great interest. According to the German newspaper Handelsblatt, nearly five thousand private users have now subscribed to Vodafone’s 5G offer. “In the beginning, 5G is especially popular with technology fans,” said Gerhard Mack, head of technology at Vodafone Germany.
By the end of 2020, the telecom operator wants to reach ten million people with 5G, and twenty million a year later. Vodafone expects a major boost with the first 5G smartphones to hit the market these days, such as the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G and the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. For customers who subscribe to the XL rate plan, Vodafone Germany would like to offer that South Korean smartphone for the subsidized symbolic price of one euro, Handelsblatt reports.
