Vine warns against leaking phone numbers and email addresses

Twitter has indicated that Vine users’ phone numbers and email addresses may have been exposed. An error in the software ensured that the data was briefly accessible to third parties.

Vine account owners have been warned via email about the possible exposure of their phone number and email address. A post has also appeared on Medium explaining the situation. However, it is not clear which vulnerability has ensured that the user information was accessible to third parties.

According to Vine owner Twitter, the user data has only been insightful for a short time; less than 24 hours. Also, not all users are said to have been affected, although no numbers have been disclosed. Twitter also says it has no indication that the telephone numbers and e-mail addresses are being actively abused.

Vine was an application that created short, six-second videos. The application quickly became popular after its release, followed by a takeover by Twitter. Shortly after, however, the popularity fell again, causing Twitter to end support last year. Vine is still available as an online video archive.
