The co-founder of Vine has released his new app byte, with a small b. Like Vine and Chinese competitor TikTok, it is a video platform that allows users to upload six-second clips. The app is available for iOS and Android.

Byte is made by American Dom Hofmann, who co-founded Vine with Rus Yusupov and Colin Kroll in 2012. Hofmann has been working on byte for several years, which was called V2 in the development phase. In 2018, it was announced that the release of the app was indefinitely postponed due to financial difficulties, but Friday the wait has come to an end.

For now, byte only has the function to post a six-second loop. Those videos can be categorized under comedy, gaming and fitness and other users can ‘reby’ them and distribute them further to their followers. There is also a like and comment system. There is not yet an option to cut and paste video.

In the description on the Play Store, among other things, the makers of byte call on you to let us know what functionalities they want to see in the app. Vine, for example, had the ability to create stop-motion effects and in TikTok one can easily add music to the video. A at least the coinage system is on its way.

Hofmann’s earlier video platform, Vine, was very popular throughout its life span, from 2013 to 2017. However, Twitter took over the service the same year it was founded and closed it in 2017. No reason was given, but the news came. on the same day that Twitter announced a batch of layoffs.
