Vimeo starts offering 4k video via On Demand
Vimeo has started offering 4k videos. For the time being, however, it only concerns paid downloads, so it is not yet possible to stream 4k content. Vimeo thinks it is still ‘too early’ to offer 4k streaming.
Filmmakers will have the opportunity to upload video images in 4k resolution to the paid service Vimeo On Demand, Gigaom said on the basis of an interview with CEO Andrew Pile. Uploading 4k images was also possible before, but then the video was converted to a lower resolution. Vimeo stops there, making it possible for users to view the images in 4k resolution.
For now, videos in 4k resolution are only available through Vimeo On Demand, where users can purchase videos and movies. Offering 4k video through the free video streaming service is not yet available. According to Pile, it is still too early to stream 4k video because there are not yet enough devices that can use it. However, Vimeo expects to start with 4k streaming in the long term.
Several online content providers already offer 4k video, including streaming. Amazon, Netflix and YouTube, among others, already offer options for viewing 4k material.
