VideoLAN port Android version from VLC to Chrome OS
VideoLAN has released its popular media player VLC for Chrome OS. The developers indicate that it is a port of the Android version of VLC that has been edited for use on Chromebooks.
With the new VLC app, VideoLAN manages to add Chromebooks to the list of supported devices. The development of the VLC version for Chrome OS was made possible by Google’s release of App Runtime for Chrome earlier this year. Via ARC it is possible to run Android apps on Chromebooks. As a result, VideoLAN was able to reuse almost all code from the VLC app for Android for the Chrome OS version.
VLC for Chrome OS supports the video and audio formats that the media player natively supports, including DVD iso and flac files. In addition, it can also automatically find subtitles and play files from a media database on Chromebooks. The developers of the app say they have tested the app with a Chromebook Pixel and HP Chromebook 14. Users of other Chromebooks may encounter problems, VideoLAN warns. To use VLC, the organization recommends Chrome OS 48 or the latest Chrome OS beta version. The media player can be downloaded for free from the Chrome Web Store.
