The brand name Toshiba returns to the European market for televisions with various UHDTVs, including a model with an OLED screen that does not have HDR, but does have Scart and VGA. The TVs are produced by the Turkish company Vestel.

The Toshiba X97-oled from Vestel has a screen diagonal of 65 inches and since it is a UHDTV, the resolution is 3840×2160 pixels. According to the company, the device can display 99 percent of the dci-p3 color space. It is not clear what the maximum screen brightness is and why no HDR support is present. A spokesperson said at the presentation in London that research showed that consumers are not yet enthusiastic about HDR.

The company provides the TV with a game mode that offers ‘a response time of less than 1ms’, according to the claim. It is not clear what the input lag is, which is usually used as a benchmark for gaming. There is also a Screenshare option, which gives the option of displaying the image of Android smartphones and tablets on the TV.

At the back are four HDMI ports, scart and VGA. It is unknown what software the TV runs on. The model has access to Netflix and YouTube; videos can be viewed in 4k resolution through these two apps. On the remote control as shown by Vestel, there is not only a button for Netflix, but also for 3d. However, the X97 OLED does not support 3D display. In the final remote control, the button for 3d will not be present, the manufacturer promised.

So Toshiba is not making its comeback to the TV market in the EU itself, but it would have had a hand in the design. The Japanese company, which is experiencing financial difficulties and has divested many activities, only lends its brand name to Vestel. A comparable construction is for example the Chinese TP Vision, which uses the brand name Philips. In early 2015, Toshiba stopped producing its own TVs.

The Toshiba X97 should hit the market in September, but the price is still unknown. Nothing is known yet about the other Toshiba UHDTVs, the U77 and U67 LCDs.
